Best Caving Practices

Cave Safely

Morrison's Cave is a wild cave with both horizontal and vertical passage. There are no ticket booths, staff, handrails, lights, etc.  Entry into Morrison's Cave requires vertical travel down a 22' pit. Take these factors into account when planning your trip, and share your plans with someone above ground. We recommend completing a Caver Safety Data Sheet and giving it to your above-ground emergency contact before you head to the cave. Don't take unnecessary risks. Cell signal doesn't reach underground, so if something goes wrong you'll need a good contingency plan already in place if you want to keep bad from becoming worse.

Cave Softly

Help us preserve Morrison's Cave and all of its inhabitants by taking only pictures, leaving only footprints, and killing only time. Some of the narrow passages serve as salamander nurseries, and care must be taken to avoid disturbing them. In a few of these passages even leaving footprints could disrupt the fragile ecosystem of Morrison's Cave, so please tread carefully! Before visiting, we ask that you familiarize yourself with the 7 Leave No Trace Principles and the laws protecting Alabama caves.

Cave Together

Entering any cave by yourself is a very bad idea. A minimum of 3 cavers per group is required. If at all possible we strongly encourage groups of 4 or larger. The rationale behind this is to ensure that if an emergency occurs, there will be enough in the group to have at least 1 caver remain with the injured (or stuck) while at least 2 cavers exit together to safely ascend to the surface to get help.

Cave Prepared

Proper training and gear is essential to make your visit a good one. Because the only entry to Morrison's Cave is via a pit drop, vertical training and gear is required to safely access the cave. Of course, standard horizontal gear is also required.

Cave Cleanly

Prevent the spread of disease by following clean caving practices. Bring something to pack your trash out, and a container to use the bathroom in if needed.
